This historical residence situated in Twickingham in downtown Huntsville has undergone a massive architectural transformation basically creating a new residence. The landscape also took on its own transformation. Various rooms were added into the yard including an orchard and edible gardens featuring fruit bearing plants, and vegetables
The hardscape design led to a patio from the backdoors and includes a new covered entertainment area, spa and fireplace. Various retaining walls were placed throughout the yard to help focus the eye, seperate rooms of the yard, and to make several grade changes.
The plant pallette is a varying feast for the senses with beautiful grasses throughout the property, and perennials that insure a bounty of cut flowers and blooming interest all year long. The house is not without the plant structure of boxwoods, and azaleas which compliment the period architecture, and southern setting. BLA was brought on board after completing the original design to continue to enhance the property's unique charms and amenities. |

This unique house is set in one of Huntsville's fastest growing renovated neighborhoods. Having undergone several renovations, and additions over the last several years, the landscape had not been updated. After the addition of a deck and screened porch, it was time to focus on the yard. The initial challenge was to unify the landscape with the architecture. Using straight planting lines, and laying out the material from the architectural details of the house, the transition from home to yard will continue to become seamless as the new plants grow.
The next challenge was to open up the backyard for the owner's two small children. With a playset that was set directly outside the backdoors, the yard seemed smaller than it actually was. By moving the playset, and giving it an area out of the way following the angles of the hardscape and house, the backyard was immediately opend up to provide a more open and kid friendly space.
The design also included a shade garden, pathways, and a larger open play area segregated from the road with a planting border for more open neighborhood play with family and friends.
Construction was completed December 2010, and in the spring will florish with perennials, shrubs, and trees. |

After undergoing a year long remodel and additiion, the homeowner was ready for the backyard to also be put back together. Having an extensiive knowledge of plant material themselves, working with the owners, was an added pleasure as one of the criteria of the design was to blend areas into the garden for the long list of beautiful airloom plants, and pass alongs from friends and neighbors right alongside a mixture of new perennials, shrubs, and grasses for a very unique setting.
Also in the design of the house was a stone veneered wall that created a fantastic location for a water feature that can be heard inside the house bringing the nature right in. The materials selected and used helped to create various rooms around the backyard with an extension of the patio, and a 'Coral Bark' maple for winter color off the back windows during the dormant months, reusing the old iron post from the front porch to create an arbor into the vegetable garden, or the intimate setting of the firepit area between two mature dogwoods for smores with the kids during crisp fall nights, it ensures that both house, and garden are one.
The homeowner told me that once the landscape was installed, she finally felt like she was home. |
